Post-It Note Game

The teacher-turned-stay-at-home mom over at Having Fun At Home came up with a fun, simple game that found it's way over to my Best Teaching Tips and Tools board. She

The game is a crossword sight word puzzle using Post-It Notes:

Here's how you could create a year-long crossword puzzle board in your room:

1. Choose a small bulletin board for the game (or designate the back of a door or one area of your wall as the game location).

2. Cut out small squares of card stock and write a different letter on each one.

3. Choose a few of the letters to create one sight word (or vocabulary word for the older grades). Use thumbtacks to attach one word to the center of the board.

4. Tack the rest of the letters around the edge of the board. Let students know that when they think they've thought of a word that might fit onto the board, they can check with you and get the okay tack it up.

The only downside I can see to this could be that students might be trying to figure out a new word while you're teaching another lesson. Hmmm...well, at least they'll be distracted by something educational instead of drawing pictures in the margins of their book. ;)
