{Distance Learning} End-of-Year Celebrations

It's here... or almost here... or almost-almost here (depending on which state you live in). SUMMER VACATION!

With Covid-19 on the loose, this summer is sure to look a little different than past summers, but that's no reason to stop celebrating the end of another school year and the start of some well-earned weeks off.

I've put together a few fun end-of-year ideas that are also social-distancing approved.

1. Do a Zoom End-of-Year Party

  • Do a class award presentation (email the rewards right after the call so they can print out their own). Find fun and silly class awards like these free ones:
Printable Awards:
End of Year Awards EDITABLE- 80 Color and B&W

Digital Awards:
End of the Year Awards Distance Learning
  • Play a game with the whole class. An easy one is a scavenger hunt. Just name a common item (ie- stuffed animal) and say GO! The first kid to come back with the item gets a point. Another great game to play if you have a small class is Drawful2 on Jackbox.tv

2. Have students create a sweet memento of their year.

This sheet is specifically designed for this Covid-19 distance learning time. It gives students a chance to document their favorite parts of the school year and to brainstorm fun things they want to do with their family this summer.

Last Day of School Printable (Quarantine / Covid-19 Version)

3. {For your own kiddos} Bust OUT of the house for summer.

Usually we bust INTO the house to celebrate coming home from school on the last day of school. This year, we thought it might be more appropriate to bust OUT of the house. We just taped party streamers and a WELCOME TO SUMMER construction paper sign over the door.

Image may contain: one or more people

3. Send a postcard to each student.

Kids LOOOOVE getting their own mail (as evidenced by my almost-8 year old daughter who has stalked the mailman every day this week leading up to her birthday)

Use this free (and SUPER CUTE) distance-learning postcards:

Christmas Preschool Pack (all dressed up)

CHRISTMAS! My absolute favorite time of the year. The minute Thanksgiving is over, the Christmas music comes on (though, if I'm being honest, I've been playing Christmas music since August) and the tree goes up.

To spread a little Christmas cheer, I thought I would polish up one of my favorite Christmas teaching products:

And what I mean when I say polish is completely demolish, reconstruct, and sprinkle with glitter.

Just look what this packet looked like before:

Bleh. Boring. And created in Microsoft Word before I knew what I was doing. (My husband might argue that I still don't know what I'm doing when it comes to computers. I would argue that he's unable to recognize pure genius when he sees it. But that's besides the point.)

For those of you who have purchased this before, good news: you get to download the new one for FREE. Just log into your Teachers Pay Teacher's account and click on this resource in your list of past purchases.

Time to go light my favorite Christmas Yankee candle (smells soooo good) and turn on some For King & Country Christmas music.

Do you get excited about Christmas too? What's your favorite Christmas tradition?

Two big announcements...

#1: I'd like to introduce our newest munchkin!

He was born 6 weeks early this past spring, but he's doing great now. Needless to say, life has been extra busy lately, but oh so much fun (I  mean, just look at that sweet smile!)...

#2: I have finally updated my U.S. History packets!

While not nearly as photogenic as my first announcement, these packets still make me super excited! My history packets were the very first thing that I created for Teachers Pay Teachers...and while they have always been a best-seller in my store, they were due for a major upgrade.

And you know me: I'm like the mouse and the cookie...once I start a small project, it quickly morphs into a huge one as I come up with more ideas. Sooooo, instead of just an update, you are getting a whole set of newly expanded units with up to twice the number of activities as the original packets.

My goal when I taught US History was to make the story come to life in my classroom. So in these packets, you will find costume day projects, create-your-own-newspapers, and other hands-on activities to put your students right in the middle of history.

And of course, if you give a girl a history packed to update, she might want to expand it...and if she expands it, she might just see all the OTHER units in her store and want to to fix them too...

I'd like you to meet my friend, Bailey... {And a deal!}

I don't do the 'hard sell thing' very often- mostly because it makes me break out in a nervous sweat... BUT sometimes important causes call for stepping our of our comfort zone, right? So here goes nothing...

Bailey's Story

One of my son’s best friends is a silly, sweet little boy named Bailey. He loves to swim in the pool, dance to music …and play with trucks.

Bailey also has a special super power: he has autism. It gives him the ability to love unconditionally and find joy in life’s little things. Autism also presents a few challenges and we are so proud to see how hard Bailey works to overcome them.

He inspired his mama to start Bailey’s Buddies, a team for Autism Speaks that raises money to change the future for all who struggle with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

You can find out more about Bailey's Buddies and Autism Speaks here.

And I've got a steal of a deal for YOU!

In honor of Bailey, I’ve created a truck-themed SuperPack for the little super hero in your life.

100% of the proceeds from this packet will go toward his mom's Walk for Autism Speaks group.

This packet is ONLY $2.99. My other preschool packs are $5, but I figured I'd make this is a win-win for everyone: you get a deal and you also get to help change the future for all who struggle with Autism Spectrum Disorder!

It would be perfect for your kids, your classroom, or to pass along to a friend with kids.

Can you help me spread the word?

Bailey's mom always says 'it takes a village to raise a son with Autism' and I was wondering if you could be small part of that village?

I would LOVE if you would share this post or these pictures with your friends. Just one click can make a big difference to those who live every day with Autism. Thanks a million!

Native American Unit Activities

Teaching US History was one of the things I enjoyed the most. It was just so much fun coming up with creative, hands-on ways to teach each fact. We dressed up, did arts and crafts, created skits, and played a ton of games.

One thing that was not so much fun was the total lack of curriculum. We had a textbook that was written on a high school reading level. For 5th graders. It included chapters on concepts such as transcendentalism and utopian societies. Now don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that students should be exposed to higher level thinking and ideas that may not necessarily be on the end-of-year test, but I drew the line at words that were over 16 letters long.

To compensate for our lack of literature on US History, we purchased a few supplemental items...but mostly it was left up to me to create the activities that went along with each lesson. While this was a massively huge amount of work initially, it ended up resulting in a year full of hands-on, engaging activities that were perfectly tailored to our classroom.

A few things we did that year:

  • Colonial Costume Day
  • Who Am I? Game
  • Native American Museum
  • The Hall of Fame
  • Create-Your-Own-Store
  • Created and voted on new school laws (which usually got the VETO stamp from President Principal) ;)
  • North v. South Great Debate

I've taken these teacher-create activities and created US History packs that are grouped by unit.

The one I'd like to share with you today is the Native American Unit:

Product Description
Fun & Creative Native American activities to supplement your unit!

Includes:
- Unit Project and Presentation
- Concentration Game
- Create-Your-Own Scrapbook activity
- Native American Chart (students draw pictures)
- Vocabulary Quiz
- General Native American Quiz.

The current tribes used are Inuit, Kwakiutl, Sioux, Iroquois, and Pueblo, but they can be changed to match the tribes you teach.
All pages can be edited to fit your state's standards. Pages are currently aligned with VA Standards of Learning.

I live in PA, so we are studying the Algonquains and the Iroquois. However, I am tweaking this project to suit those tribes. My 4th grade students are getting ready to create their Native American Museum and are so excited. Hoping for quality work!!!!

Create a Writing Project Checklist

There were many areas of teaching that I jumped into with huge amounts of enthusiasm when I first started.

Finding fun ways to teach U.S. History. Check.

Winning over the sulky kid in the back row. Done and Done.

Moving said sulky kid to the front of the room. No Brainer.

Decorating my room. Uh, people, puh-leeze. That was what I was day-dreaming about in my Freshman biology class.

Figuring out how to teach kids to create amazing written work. Um....I'll think about that tomorrow.

Yup, being a writing teacher was hugely intimidating to me. I just didn't know where to start. I couldn't wrap my head around how you could work with 25 completely unique writers who were all finishing their work at different paces and how I could keep track of it all.

After fumbling through the writing process with my students for a few weeks, I finally had an intervention with myself. It went something like this:

Self: You are totally screwing this up. A whole generation of terrible writers is about to be unleashed upon the world and it's all your fault.

Self: I KNOW! I'm a terrible human being! What am I going to do?!

Self: You're going to pull yourself together, girl, and do what you do best: Create. A. Chart!

       *Chorus of Angles Singing*

So, I breathed a deep breath and commenced Mission: Create-A-Chart. By the end of the day, I had created a Writing Project Checklist that actually got me excited to teach writing. It took the gargantuan job of managing a classroom full of writers and boiled it down to a system that just ended up working perfectly for my room.

Interested in doing something like this in your room? You can take the short-cut route ('cuz we all love saving some time every now and again, right?) and just use my form here. It can be completely edited to fit the skills you are teaching in your classroom.

Or if you'd rather create your own, let me give you a few pointers that I found useful...

1. Split the writing process into manageable chunks. My writing project checklist was a step-by-step guide that students would use to steer them through the writing process. It was split into four sections: First Draft, Revising, Editing, and Final Draft. (We always practiced brainstorming together as a class.)

2. Decide what main things you want your students to focus on in each section. Under each section, I listed a series of steps that they needed to check off. For example, under their first draft would be instructions to skip lines on their paper, have a introduction paragraph, etc. Under revising, students needed to add interesting adjectives with a red pencil and check that each sentence started in a different way. The editing section was where spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes were fixed. The final draft included instructions for creating a title, writing their name on the paper, etc.

3. Have the FORM automatically schedule your teacher-student writing conferences. The most beneficial thing about my new chart was that at the end of each section, there was a box that had to be signed by me before they could continue on to the next section. Instead of having to guess where students were in the writing process and trying to catch them at the right  moment, each student let me know when they were ready for their conference. We'd read their work, go through the checklist to see what kind of changes they'd made or if they'd paid attention to the writing skills I wanted them to demonstrate, and then they moved onto the next step.

This chart made the writing process smooth and enjoyable in my room. It also gave the students the same set of steps every time...by the time the end-of-year writing test rolled around, I saw most of them with their red pencils out, adding their adjectives. And let me tell you, those red pencils made this first-year teacher super-proud of my little band of writers. :)

p.s.- 100% of my students passed the test that year. Even though I know all of these little authors have graduated by now and moved on to bigger things, I just want to say that I am still so proud of you guys and the hard work you put into your writing that year!

What's your best classroom management tip for writing?
