What You Allow...

{via}

I think this is so true when it comes to classroom discipline. Setting the expectations at the beginning of the year is key to creating a classroom that runs smoothly and without too much conflict.

A few ways to do this:

1. Have your class rules clearly visible somewhere in the room. Refer to the list as you are reinforcing the rule.

2. Have a routine for everything. Kids thrive when they know what is expected of them and what comes next. Give them that security by having a fun little routine for getting in line, packing up their bags, turning in their work, getting ready for lunch, etc.

3. When you introduce a new rule, practice it over and over. Your kids will get a kick out of pretending that they are 'going crazy' and having you do the signal to quiet them down.

4. Give you students some say in what rules your class should have. Call a class meeting and talk about what new rules our class should have. You might be surprised what they come up with!

Enjoying The Small Things

Shel Silverstein! Yes! Love that man and his creative (and quirky) mind. One of my favorite units to teach in 5th grade was the poetry unit at the end of the year. We'd read a few Shel Silverstein poems as the end of each class (after the "only if we work really hard today" speech- these poems were a great incentive for students!) and my students l.o.v.e.d. listening to them. This was our favorite book:

I even found an audio recording Shel made of these poems and we'd listen to those with the lights turned off after we'd packed up our bags for the day. Such a nice way to end the day!

Here's the cd:

But back to the quote... I love the idea that one quality that good teachers possess is being able to still see the world through a child's eyes. I mean, how boring would life be if we didn't all get still get a bit excited to hear the ice cream truck's bell or to splash through that random puddle?

What are some fun, small things in life that still bring you joy?

Teach Them What Counts

I love this quote. It's so true that teachers today are more than just academic instructors....they are in the unique position of a huge influencer in a child's life. Next to their parents or guardians, a child spends more time in the presence of his or her teacher than anyone else.

I think this quote is a lovely reminder that, while facts and academic skills are important, instilling character in our students is a worthy goal. These are the lessons that will positively impact the kids who come through your classroom well beyond the single year you have them.

One little way to start displaying and practicing positive character traits with your class is through starting a Random Acts of Kindness Club

What are some ways you incorporate character education moments in your room?
